How to Layer Your Skincare

Recently we received a question about skin care products and which order to use them. The art of skincare has evolved into multiple steps and knowing when to use what can be confusing. This is a great question, so we decided to share the answer with all of you.
The simple answer is when applying any skincare product, you always want to start with the lightest weight product first. This allows each product to penetrate the skin. Think of it like this, you have sand on your skin, would you use water to rinse it off first before applying tanning lotion or oil? Of course you would, otherwise, the water would bead up and probably not do you much good. This is because the water is thinner than the product.
Let’s take what we now know and apply that to your daily skincare routine. Always start with a cleanser to create a clean fresh pallet to work with. What would your second product be? If you are serious about your skin your next step should be a serum, followed by an oil, and then moisturizer. If you follow the consistency of the product you will get it right every time.
You may be thinking what is the difference between serum, oil, or potion? That is a fair question and one we are happy to answer. A serum is generally a concentrated ingredient that is a watery consistency. They are used to address specific issues. A potion is similar but usually will contain a mixture of several serums for a broader fix. Facial oil containing similar ingredients as a serum in oil form will boost hydration and help lock in products applied previously to skin. A common misconception is that if you have oily skin you should stay away from oils, however, this is not true. Skin that produces oil does not mean it is moisturized. Many people with oil-prone skin will use products to stripe the skin of oil which dries the skin out more causing the skin to produce more oil because of the disruption of its natural balance. This leads to clogged pores and breakouts as well as making skin feel greasier. Face oils help keep your skin moisturized and helps the skin from over-producing oil to make up for the dryness.
We hope this helps you educate your customers in taking care of their skin. Remember healthy moisturized skin not only tans better, it glows!
