A True Story About the Power of Impulse Buys-By Tammy Reed
Back in 2002, after a long day at work, I decided to stop by my local tanning salon before heading home. I had about a 35-minute drive ahead of me, but as I was basking in the glow of my tanning bed, my phone rang. It was my brother. Knowing I was a die-hard Kenny Chesney fan, he excitedly told me he had scored last-minute tickets to his concert at a local casino. The only catch? The show started in an hour and a half.
Panic set in. There was no way I could make it home, get dolled up, and meet him and my sister at the venue in time. As I stood in the tanning salon mirror, I took stock of my situation. At least I had on jeans, a denim shirt, and boots—pretty on-theme for a country concert. I threw my hair up in a clip and told myself, "It’s just a concert, not a beauty contest." So, I made do and went.
Midway through the concert, my brother dropped a bombshell. “Oh, by the way, you're going backstage to meet Kenny Chesney.”
WHAT?! Cue the internal meltdown.
The whole time I was standing there, all I could think about was, "Does Kenny Chesney smell the tanning lotion on me? Did I even put on deodorant today? Why is my hair so greasy?!" This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and I couldn’t enjoy it because I wasn’t prepared.
Looking back, I realized that if my tanning salon had some basic personal care items available, I could have been ready for anything—maybe even ready to become Mrs. Kenny Chesney! (Ok – happy with that now – but then….)
The Takeaway for Salon Owners: Every client has moments where they wish they were more prepared—whether it’s an unexpected event, a spontaneous date night, or an impromptu meetup with friends. Stocking impulse-buy items like the ones below not only adds to your bottom line but also ensures your clients are always ready for the unexpected.
Here are some essentials that Heartland has available (and we like to think “non negotiables) that every salon should offer as convenient impulse buys:
Travel-size deodorant: Perfect for a quick refresh post-tan or post-treatment.
Dry shampoo: This is for clients who don’t have time to wash and style their hair but still want to look fresh.
Brushes/Teaser comb: After laying in the bed, help aid in the client feeling normal and not making a crazy fool of themselves walking out the door.
Makeup / Body wipes: Quick and easy for clients who need to refresh their look before heading out.
Mini hair styling products (clips, bands, or spray): A small styling kit can work wonders for someone who’s caught off-guard.
Body mist or travel-size fragrance: A light scent to help clients feel confident walking out the door.
Beauty Blenders/Puffs/Brushes: Essential for controlling shine and keeping that fresh look all day.
Lip balm or gloss: Sometimes, just a hint of shine or moisture can make someone feel put together.
Razors or Tweezers: No one wants that straggler of a hair gaining all the attention.
Facial Cream / Bronzing Powders: Smooth/ Healthy Skin with a hint of contouring could make all the difference.
These items don’t just serve as a convenience—they could turn into lifesavers for clients, making their day a little better and leaving them grateful to your salon for thinking ahead.
