<p>In 2017, Spray tan artist Taryn Luquin wanted to create a day to celebrate women and spray tanning. With the idea of National Women’s Day being March 8<sup>th</sup>, what better way to help women look as good as they feel that day than by creating National Spray Tan Day two days before (so you have time for that beautiful spray tan prior).</p>
<p>In 2023, Sunless Inc created National Spray Tanning Day to be held on March 16<sup>th</sup>. In addition, they created media kits for salons to use as well as news articles to get the word out. Many salons took advantage of the help to promote the day in their salons.</p>
<p>While there was some debate on the actual holiday, we see them as two separate days (heck, you can’t have too many tanning holidays right). The names are slightly different, so we advise creating two separate events with different ways to participate.</p>
<p>In thinking about how we wanted to participate, Heartland realized that we have never had a Customer Appreciation Day solely focused on sunless. With that, we created our first SUNLESS CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY!</p>
<p>Like other CAD events we have had, tomorrow March 16<sup>th</sup> we will have specials on sunless items, giveaways, and sunless surprise bags with qualifying orders. We cannot wait to show our sunless customers that we appreciate them as much as we do our UV customers.</p>

<p>Every year Heartland has hosted a winter expo to help educate, motivate, and jump-start the new tanning season, and this year will be no different. When planning the event this year we listened to salons’ concerns and the current economic conditions. Here is what we found:</p>
<ul>
<li>Staffing in January is complicated. Salons are either in the process of hiring or are still working with a limited staff.</li>
<li>The cost of travel, hotel, and other accommodations (especially bringing staff) can quickly become a hardship for salon owners, especially after the slow season.</li>
<li>These events really only benefit those who attend. This means any new hires are left with limited resources for education and training.</li>
<li>Taking time away from the salon just as the season is starting or running a slim crew can be challenging for salon owners.</li>
<li>The weather in Kansas City is unpredictable in the winter and can impact speakers' and attendees’ ability to travel.</li>
<li>A downturned economy puts events like this out of budget for some salon businesses.</li>
</ul>
<p> When we looked at these factors, Heartland decided to figure out a better way to combat these issues and provide more value to our salon partners without sacrificing the need for this timely educational event. By going virtual we can eliminate about 90% of these concerns. But there was hesitation.</p>
<p>Only a few short years from lockdowns, would people want to do an online event?</p>
<p>We know the importance of in-person gatherings. With our Owners Retreat in June, we can spoil salon owners and managers to celebrate a successful season, without salons having to break the bank to bring all the staff.</p>
<p>We also know that while webinars are nice, some are getting burned out on attending them. But this isn’t a webinar! This event is a fun, interactive event combining education and entertainment. To make it even more beneficial, this event will be recorded. This means you have training for all new hires all season long! Have staff that needed to cover the salon so you could attend? <p>You see them on television, in magazines, and on social media. People with flawless skin. It’s like they walk around with filters on, always looking like perfection. We all know that Hollywood, advertisers, and publications “enhance” the look of the people they work with. Meanwhile, the rest of us must walk around with our imperfections out for the whole world to see… or so we think.</p>
<p>Most women (and men) are fully aware of the power of makeup and its ability to change one’s appearance. Think of the viral video of the woman applying makeup saying, “If the men find out we can shapeshift, they are going to tell the church”—contouring and highlighting features used to be something only celebrity makeup artists and special effects artists did. However, over the last 20 years, it has become so common that a large portion of women and men contour daily. The question is, who wants to walk around with a flawless face, but the rest of your body looks bad? The contrast makes even the most minimal imperfections stand out. Enter body makeup.</p>
<p>According to US Consumer Trends, body makeup is the second-fastest-growing makeup category. There are many reasons for this other than those mentioned above. The world is in a transition phase between generational thinking. The younger generation freely expresses who they are artistically, be that fashion-colored hair, body modifications, or body art. However, there is still an entire generation that looks at this being unacceptable in some work and social environments. <p>Each year in quarter 1 Heartland hosts our annual expo. 2021 would have been our 30<sup>th</sup> annual Expo (which we were forced to move to a virtual format). Where we had over 500 salon owners and staff from all over America logged in, it was a great success. But we wanted more. Something was just missing. Nothing beats that human interaction, in-person learning, etc. Salons greatly appreciated the content and the effort – but the decision of no in-person had the vast majority highly disappointed. We brainstormed and decided – if we can do this safely and responsibly – we WILL be together in 2021. Not only for the salons but for us. This is our facetime with our salon friends. Therein lies the 1<sup>st</sup> Annual Owners and Operators retreat we hosted in June 2021. Salon owners, again, from across the map greeted each other in the lobby of the historic hotel tears streaming. It was truly magical to witness. At the end of the fun-filled weekend we thought to ourselves, well, we can have the 1<sup>st</sup> qtr. virtually, and the owners retreat in person each year from this point forward. Decision made…… not so fast. After speaking with several salon owners, they voiced the importance of their staff learning in person each year, however, the Owners Retreat was special, so Heartland must do both. Some went as far as to say our event in qtr. 1 is and always has been their kickoff with new employees and when they learned virtually, it was never the same. Quoting stats even of those who attend our events have stayed employed longer and have made long term plans. WOW – now that is some pressure. So, we could not disappoint. 2022 Heartland Retail Bootcamp was born. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>With each year, we strive to one-up ourselves from the year prior. This was no different – what these salon owners said to me I took to heart. So, with Owners Retreat – we know our topics and conversations are owner specific. Topics you would not necessarily want to have in the company of your staff. So, Bootcamp 2022 was geared all towards the salon staff. We started off Friday with specific product training by our wonderful manufacturer partners, Sun Is Life Training (joe Schuster), Norvell University (Brandon Cardinal and Jacob Hale), and ended the evening with our popular gathering (safely of course) our Bootcamp Mixer which included food, drinks, yard games, dancing to a dueling pianos band. Of course, Heartland loves a theme, and all staff and customers alike were dawning their camo gear, along with the table centerpieces that were military-themed with a special tribute to our soldiers. That tribute were family members of Heartland that have served and pictured in their uniforms. From the Civil War to Current Day. </p>

<p>Moving into day 2, Saturday, our focus was to make them grow as salespeople, merchandisers, customer service managers, and more. To the point of hiring an expert Jeff Driscoll, from Sandler Training to really dig deep as to each attendee’s personality and how that affects sales and what needs to happen to make them better. Another thing we received feedback on was hearing more from salon owners. Which the light bulb went off in my head. Perfect. Our already amazing industry speakers, we will pair them with a salon owner. Could not have loved this more. A huge thank you to Gina Jaeger / Sun Evolutions and Leslie Westfall / Studio 636, Megan Racine / Devoted Creations, Brandon Cardinal / Norvell and Micelle Norvell / WHAT IS SALON NAME / Jordan Stamper / new Sunshine & Janessa Howell / Celsius for working so hard and creating amazing contact for our attendees. Never had we had this format – and I think it’s a keeper. All attendees went home with over $800 in value from our end-of-day goody bags to include Heartland gifted each owner a private session with Mr. Driscoll to further their learning. </p>

<p>High winds, power outages, and being forced to huddle in the basement area of the Elms Resort and Spa in suburban Kansas City did not dampen the spirits or enthusiasm of 120 attendees representing 65 salons from across the country at Heartland Tan’s first-ever summer retreat “Mind your Business”, June 10 and 11. “We wanted to have a gathering that would be equal parts owner-based issues and a celebration of a difficult past 15 months and the industry’s victorious emergence from the Pandemic” stated Tammy Reed. Sr. V.P. in charge of Distribution for Heartland. Several roundtable discussions covering a variety of owner-requested topics were held, led by long-time industry pro, Joe Schuster. The Elms, a historic resort where former presidents, gangsters, and show business personalities have all been guests, proved to be a wonderful backdrop for the gathering that included unique gifts and surprises at every turn. “ We have had many gatherings for our valued clients over the years, but the reception we received from all the attendees was 100% positive. Tammy and the staff did a wonderful job producing the event, even with the big storm coming through Friday afternoon. The main theme amongst our guests was, we survived a worldwide pandemic, a thunderstorm is no big deal! Plus, our vendor partners really stepped up and supported the function. Sun Evolutions, Norvell, New Sunshine, and KBL were the primary sponsors, and we very much appreciate the relationship we have with all of them, “ commented Brad Henson COO and Partner of Heartland. “We will expand upon this unique concept and hopefully next time, minus the weather.”</p>

<p>Lockdowns have you going mad? Looking to break free and relax with other industry professionals? We’ve heard you and we couldn’t be more excited to tell you about Mind Your Business- Owners & Operators Retreat 2021.</p>
<p>We’re not letting all the mystery out yet but, we will let you know that this event will be an experience you won't soon forget. This is not an expo, rather an intimate gathering of industry professionals to collaborate with for an amazing business future.</p>
<p>A little about the venue-</p>
<p>Since we are making history with our very first retreat, we thought it only fitting to choose a venue with a history of its own. While the current hotel has just reached the 100-year mark there has been a hotel on this land for over 125 years! The Elms Hotel and Spa has a rich history and remains a destination spot to this day.</p>
<p>The Elms was a playground and health spa for the well-to-do. Prominent citizens from all walks of life as well as both sides of the law. Politicians, sports stars, and crime figures created a heady combination of hotel guests. Al Capone, “Pretty Boy” Floyd, and Bugsy Moran reportedly hosted illegal gambling and bathtub gin parties. Police tried to raid The Elms during Prohibition on several occasions. During one memorable attempt, the police busted in on a cocktail party that included the Governor of Missouri. The Governor memorably told the cops to go out and bust someone who was “really breaking the law.”</p>
<p>We cannot wait to tell you more about this event, however, you will have to wait just a bit longer. For safety and size of venue, we are keeping this small and it will sell out quickly. Registration will open Monday, March 8th for VIP tickets and Thursday, March 11th for standard.
